Arena Essex - Sun 1st November Unlimited Bangers - Firecracker XVIII (79 cars) Drivers Racing: (List with thanks to Matt Bull’s Emergency Parcel Tape Repairs!)
Results: Heat 1 (21 cars): 917, 39, 812, 383, nof. Special Award: 310. Smart Cars: 888, 1. Firecracker XVIII Final (42 cars): 917, 247, 812, 507,141, nof. Special Award: 141. Allcomers into DD (26 cars): 141, 812. Last Car: 511 from 141. Best Wrecker: 1. Best Wreck of the Day: 736. The lowest ever turnout for the Firecracker, despite Volvos and Jap scrap being allowed back in, although it was still a quality line-up, with some epic material (see attached list). Sadly, one of the Brighton Bears cars failed scrutineering and the whole team decided to load up and leave before the start of the racing. Despite heavy rain in the morning (making the trek round the pits rather wet), it surprisingly cleared up right on start time and no further rain was seen. Heat 1 kicked off with 1 Maarten Steenbekkers, 678 Thomas Hollingworth and 785 Barry Collins getting into a tangle coming out of turn 4, with 515 Connor Harvey blitzing 1 Steebekkers on the home straight. 514 Charlie Taylor fenced 139 Iain Knight on turn 1, with 999 Paul Norman and 734 Mark Saunders crashing in behind as a pile up formed. 678 Hollingworth T-boned 514 Taylor, as 310 Chas Lee bravely went for a blitz in his P4 on the much bigger 515 Harvey limo on the home straight. 192 Gregory de Luyck buried himself in the back of Lee and steamed him down the home straight, helped along as 812 Tom Reynolds picked up de Luyck. Lee and de Luyck then negotiated turns 1 and 2 to end on the back straight, still locked together, where 457 Dan McCormack smacked into 192 de Luyck. 514 Taylor got going again to dish out more damage to 139 Knight in the turn 2 pile up as 917 John Millen took the win, having spun 383 Jeff Smith en route. Heat 2 started with 57 Gunther van den Broeck following in 152 Tony Broughton on turn 3, as 130 Craig Jackson was spun on the back straight and blitzed by 851 Kevin Huybrechts. A pile up formed on turn 4 in which 589 Simon Smith blitzed 356 Luke Radley. 208 Jimmy Randall steamed 741 Cor Cuys into turn 3, before collecting 130 Jackson head-on, with 363 Sam Keep weighing into Randall. 136 Clyde Williams T-boned 130 Jackson, as 541 Kieran Francis gave 390 Dirk Audenaerde a head-on. 589 Smith dished out a head-on to 335 Paul Hales before T-boning 700 Phil Lee, with Hales taking further damage from 208 Randall. A jacking train formed on turn 2 with 84 Kevin Snell taking a hit from 527 Danny Gardiner, with 136 Williams weighing into him. 54 Martin Lawton collected Williams before getting blitzed by 741 Cor Kuys. 541 Francis and 130 Jackson met head-on, with Francis taking a hit from 556 Christopher Whiteman. 208 Randall went on opposite, but collected the passing 356 Radley near the driver’s door. 247 Chris Trickett had built up a big lead, before 556 Whiteman tried to stop him by going on opposite on turn 2. However, Trickett shrugged off the hit and continued to go on for the win. The third heat saw an early turn 4 pile up, as 757 Jo van Rysselberghe hit the spun 814 Joe McDiarmid down the home straight. 498 Jason Curtis, 681 James Hutchins, 43 Nicky Bishop and 141 Dan Steele all tangled to go into the fence on turn 2, with 182 Mark Thompson going over the kerb and into the fence on turn 2 before getting jacked by the traffic. 268 Buster Hutchins was hit after spinning on the exit of turn 2, as 449 Will Guppy T-boned 119 Mario Waterschoot on turn 1. 108 Dean Andrews was fenced on turn 4, to start another pile up as 677 Darren Bryan stuffed 239 Andy Swift into him. 8 Maikel Kollenburg collected Swift, the latter then crashing into 43 Bishop and 25 Paul Ring in the pile up on turn 4. Swift was then attacked by 736 Nicky Simpson, Simpson then taking a blitz from 498 Curtis to leave his XJS in a mess with its back axle coming out. 727 Tommy Anderson steamed 40 Ben Reeder on the back straight, as 757 van Rysselberghe went on opposite to meet 113 Ian Beaumont off turn 4. The race was then stopped after just 4 laps with only 873 Frederick de Witte left running for the win. 589 Smith took off on opposite as the consolation got underway and met 192 de Luyck head-on on the home straight. 527 Gardiner piled into the back of 192 de Luyck, before getting blitzed by 681 Hutchins. 498 Curtis collected Hutchins, and the lot of them went into the fence on turn 1, with 222 Ricky Walters latched on the back. 333 Danny Webb blitzed 222 Walters, as 734 Saunders followed in 363 Keep on turn 3. 541 Francis met 192 de Luyck head-on on the pit bend, where the Dutchman was blitzed by 333 Webb. 589 Smith gave 400 Walter van Rosmalen a head-on down the home straight, as 108 Andrews went fencebound on turn 1 with 208 Randall. 333 Webb collected the on opposite 555 Ben Williams head-on on turn 1, with 611 Joe Geeves then giving 333 Webb a head-on. 734 Saunders T-boned 611 Joe Jeeves on turn 1, before 84 Snell had a big fire on turn 1, at which point the race was called with 739 Steve Guppy the winner. The Final saw 888 Ben Shirley hit 560 Steve Ward head-on on turn 4, before 57 van den Broeck, 678 Hollingworth and 43 Bishop were involved in a shunt to crash into 888 Shirley. The following traffic piled in behind with 182 Thompson getting wrecked, as 831 Tony Broughton T-boned 239 Swift on turn 3, before taking a portion from 206 Phil Milner. 589 Smith collected the fence 122 Danny Batchelor, who had been involved in a jacking train with 442 Ricky Deans and 727 Anderson. 851 Huybrechts then blitzed 25 Ring near the pit gate and shoved him into 122 Batchelor, as 356 Radley blitzed 206 Milner to start a jacking train with 136 Williams and 527 Gardiner crashing in behind, these latter two bouncing off to the side to allow 174 Dave Osborn to weigh into 356 Radley. 27 Andy Reynolds collected Osborn, with 39 Steve Moore running into him, with 873 de Witte piling into Moore. 39 Moore and 27 Reynolds got going again to meet head-on, as 432 Munson spun 498 Curtis into the back straight fence. 507 Danny Brown dished out a head-on to 27 Reynolds, with Reynolds also getting hit by Munson, as 247 Trickett jacked 141 Steele to get through the pit bend pile up. 917 Millen emerged as the leader by around half a lap over 247 Trickett, as third placed 812 Reynolds attacked 141 Steele, before delaying 917 Millen. On the penultimate lap, 917 Millen was caught by 141 Steele in the pit bend pile up and collected 136 Williams, allowing 247 Trickett to close right up. However, Millen managed to fight his way through the pile up and went on to claim the win. The Allcomers/DD saw a back straight jacking train with 851 Huybrechts hitting 741 Cuys, before 442 Deans weighed into Huybrechts. 57 van den Broeck and 43 Bishop crashed in behind, as 741 Cuys got going again to blitz 527 Gardiner. 560 Ward attacked 43 Bishop, as 611 Geeves hit 851 Huybrechts on the home straight. 40 Reeder, 130 Jackson and 8 Maikel steamed round turns 1 and 2, as 43 Bishop T-boned 54 Lawton.141 Steele hooked out 8 Maikel on the back straight, as 192 de Luyck went on opposite to attack 511 Paul Staples. 1 Steenbekkers fenced 54 Lawton on turn 1, as 141 Steele jacked 43 Bishop on the back straight. 812 Reynolds closed on 141 Steele, but Steele stayed ahead to take the win. The DD commenced straight after with 812 Reynolds fencing 152 Broughton on turn 1, as 141 Steele gave 363 Keep a head-on on the pit bend. 1 Steenbekkers blitzed 363 Keep, as 511 Staples gave 141 Steele a head-on to take the win. 1300 Stock Cars – 14 cars Drivers Racing:

Allcomers (20 cars): 84, 259, 1, 390, 2, 97, 21, 338, 267, 244. The White and Yellow Top Final started proceedings with 307 Tim Warwick taking an early lead. 215 Geoff Nickolls spun on the home straight as 244 Mick Rogers overhauled 330 Graham Wagstaff to run in second. 307 Warwick maintained his lead to go on for the win.
Heat 1 had a poor start with the yellow grade amongst the white tops before the green flag dropped. 54 Hayley Parkinson hooked onto 246 Ian Brickley’s nerf rail from turn 1 to turn 3 before causing a pile up with 13 Andy Ford riding over 246 Brickley and 380 Steven Cayzer and 197 Ryan Harrison also getting caught up. The race was halted with 330 Wagstaff leading the restart, as a bundle at the rear of the field delayed 390 Stuart Smith Jnr. 515 Frankie Wainman Jnr surged through the pack and soon took the lead, with 4 Daniel Johnson, 21 Mark Gilbank and 390 Smith battling behind. 97 Murray Harrison T-boned 446 Joe Booth to cause a pile up on turn 2, before 515 Wainman’s engine blew going into turn 3 and he went out in a cloud of smoke. 259 Paul Hines took over the lead and went on for the win, as 4 Johnson overhauled 390 Smith in the battle for third.
415 Russell Cooper led heat 2, as 41 Richard Broome clipped a marker tyre. 246 Brickley and 97 Harrison went into the fence on turn 4, as 41 Broome was collected by 335 Mark Woodhull, and they both hit the fence. 307 Warwick clambered over 441 John Lawn on turn 3, as 244 Rogers passed 415 Cooper for the lead. 192 Luke Dennis was fenced hard when he got caught up in a red top train into turn 3, as 1 Andy Smith got up 244 Rogers’ inside to take over at the front. 4 Johnson nearly spun after tangling with 244 Rogers in the battle for third. 1 Smith went on for the flag, as 4 Johnson recovered to gain a place by barging past 84 Tom Harris on the last bend.
13 Ford soon overhauled 415 Cooper for the lead in the third heat and he opened up a gap. 335 Woodhull and 129 Steve Lewin collected the marker tyres, as 1 Smith and 390 Smith scythed through the field.13 Ford suddenly retied to the infield with mechanical problems, with 1 Smith taking over the lead. 244 Rogers spun on turn 2, as 415 Cooper was doing a good job of holding off the chasing red graders. 390 Smith tracked his brother before putting in the bumper on the last bend, sending him wide to take the win.
A lowly field of cars gathered for the Final, with a lot of the low graders failing to grid. Amazingly, 515 Wainman lined up having swapped his blown engine for the one out of brother 212 Danny Wainman’s car! 415 Cooper set the pace, as 515 Wainman got away from the Smith brothers, but he was then bundled aside. 97 Harrison took the lead, as 515 Wainman put in a hard hit to 335 Woodhull into turn 3, stuffing him into 390 Smith and the pair of them bounced around the plating on turn 4. 21 Gilbank then spun 515 Wainman on turn 1, Wainman being forced to retire soon after with a flat. 1 Smith started to reel in 97 Harrison, before 267 Graeme Robson clipped a marker tyre on turn 3 to create a tricky racing line. 1 Smith then lost ground on Harrison, with 259 Hines starting to catch him. However, the order remained the same to the line, with 97 Harrison taking the chequered.
The National kicked off with 4 Johnson giving 192 Dennis a big hit into turn 3, as 515 Wainman half spun on turn 1, as the race was halted for the fenced 4 Johnson. The Smiths, Wainman and Gilbank had a brief battle on the restart before Wainman dropped back, 84 Harris then taking the lead. Wainman retired to the infield to end the night with no points having put in loads of effort, as 84 Harris went on to take the chequered.

The race started with a pile up on turns 3 and 4, as 311 Lown fenced 928 Richard Steele. 337 Ashley Garrod was spun into the fence in the latter stages, as 385 Roy Gedge came through the field to claim the win.
The first Allcomers race was rather quiet, with 345 Richard Lown taking the flag, the only incident of note happening in the latter stages as the spun 14 Roland Bullock was collected and jacked by the traffic.
Allcomers 2 had a few spins, as 100 Martin Broomfield attacked 316 Sean Haller on the home straight run-off area. 115 Chris Wagg then gave 316 Haller a head-on, with 100 Broomfield then jacking Wagg, as 310 Luke Holdsworth took the flag.
The DD started with 338 Terry Garrod hooking out 791 Nicky Young, the latter then taking a steam from 928 Steele round turn 3.338 Garrod T-boned Steele, as 311 Lown attacked 897 Matt Battle. Steel weighed into Lown, before taking a hit from Battle. Lown and Battle then exchanged hits, before Battle attacked Steele. Lown blitzed Battle before T-boning Steele. Battle got going again to give Steele a head-on, before Lown T-boned Battle. Battle and Steele had one more head-on, before Lown blitzed Battle to take the win.

Allcomers 1 saw 791 Young do an end over end roll on turn 1, ending on all threes to continue only to roll once again. 203 Reeson and 385 Gedge went over soon after, as 355 Mick Walker took the flag. 791 Young went on opposite early in the second Allcomers to take a hard hit from 195 Pete Bowley near the pit gate. 553 Daniel Douglas also got involved bringing out the yellow flags.385 Gedge fenced 3 Danielle Hewitt on the restart, as 854 Karl Pickworth rolled, before 791 Young and 379 Graham combined to both go over. Graham went over once again to end on his roof in the fence with 355 Walker to cause another stoppage. 385 Gedge flipped while the yellow flags were out, and then completed a massive triple roll down the home straight when the race got underway again with bits of fibreglass flying everywhere! 379 Graham collected 791 Young, as 576 Aldred took his second win of the evening. GN (20 cars): 84, 335, 4, 107, 2, 21, 446, 34, 53, 380. A good turnout of cars for the inaugural Golden Helmet Anglo-Dutch weekend, with a dozen drivers from the Netherlands in attendance, including newly crowned World Cup Champion H217 Ron Kroonder. Also returning to racing was 362 Lionel Shaw, who was last seen out on track back in 1999. Saturday’s first heat was led away by 158 James Clement, as the red tops had a sort out in a big turn 3 shunt. 13 Andy Ford caught 330 Graham Wagstaff and put in a hard hit. H32 Axel Nijs stalled on turn 3, with the pack managing to avoid him except 223 Garry Townsend, who wrecked his front wheel to grind to a halt on turn 1. 98 Les Spencer and 254 Ike Parkinson tangled to crash out on the infield, as 107 Lee Robinson bumpered 291 Dan Squire into turn 1. 97 Murray Harrison bumpered past 335 Mark Woodhull, before spinning on turn 4, as 13 Ford tangled with 446 Joe Booth. H6 Pascal Spigt then spun hard into the stationary 223 Townsend on turn 1, as H217 Kroonder hit 13 Ford, with the yellow flags then coming out for Spigt. At one point, it looked as if the roof would have to be removed from the H6 car, but Spigt eventually managed to climb out to get into the awaiting ambulance. (It looks as if he has bruised his back, and it was good to see him walking round the pits on the Sunday). The restart saw 158 Clement still leading, although the backmarking H25 Berry Paardenkooper gave him some hassle. 97 Harrison then reeled in Clement and overhauled him in the closing stages to take the win. Heat 2 kicked off with the yellow graders getting into a tangle, to bring a turn 4 marker tyre on the track. 288 Simon Panton rode over 73 Rob Cowley as a small pile up developed on turn 4. 238 Richard Bryan spun into the fence, as 215 Geoff Nickolls took up the running. 362 Shaw T-boned 73 Cowley into turn 1, causing a chicane, but they eventually broke free to continue. In the closing stages, 21 Mark Gilbank started catching 215 Nickolls, but the latter held on to take his third Coventry heat win of the year. A pot hole, which started appearing on turn 1 earlier in the meeting, was filled in and well watered before the start of the third heat. The race started with 2 Paul Harrison spinning on turn 4 to get T-boned by 515 Frankie Wainman Jnr and 390 Stuart Smith Jnr. Wainman picked up a flat rear, as 242 David Nickolls overhauled 415 Russell Cooper to take the lead. 54 Hayley Parkinson shunted 258 Rob Harrad off the racing line on turn 1, as 34 Mal Brown also collected the fence, with the yellows coming out to check on Harrad. 242 Nickolls led the restart, as H228 Jan Roelof Wijbinga hit the turn 1 fence. 380 Steven Cayzer hassled 390 Smith, as 338 Chris Brocksopp took 35 Neil Shenton wide on turn 1. 335 Woodhull tangled with 55 Craig Finnikin off turn 2, Finnikin getting going again, only for 338 Brocksopp to wheelie up his side and they drove most of the back straight with Brocksopp’s front bumper resting on Finnikin’s aerofoil! 390 Smith closed on 242 Nickolls in the latter laps, but Nickolls stayed ahead to make it a double win for the Nickolls family. Before the consolation, a decision about the turn 1 pothole on turn 1 was made. This had grown considerably, and was also right down to the original base of the track, so it was throwing out large stones and other rubble. The decision was to continue racing, and so the pothole was filled in once again, with the first consolation starting with 105 Chris Bonner clipping a tyre on turn 3 to get airborne and spin round. H29 Durk Greidanus broadsided into turn 1 and got up onto two wheels, as H217 Kroonder collected the fence on turn 1. 13 Ford took up the running, as H61 Koen Maris spun hard into 254 Parkinson on turn 1, as 13 Ford went on for the win. The pothole was again filled in before the second consolation, with 301 Mark Allen leading before spinning on turn 4. 307 Tim Warwick took over the running, but he was hooked out by 276 Mark Poole for the lead, Poole retiring to the infield soon after. This put 515 Wainman in the lead, as 337 Dave Willis had a close battle with 288 Panton. 197 Ryan Harrison put in a hard hit on H60 Henk Maris, as 515 Wainman went on for the win. Unfortunately, with the extra time that had been required to repair the pothole between races, the 11pm curfew had been reached, so the meeting was called at this point, with the remaining races to be run first on the Sunday. Sunday dawned, with many of the track staff having been up most of the night trying to make a better job of repairing the pothole. However, to try and stop drivers going over the pothole, six marker tyres were chained together and painted white, and these were placed over the pothole to alter the racing line into turn 1. The meeting commenced with Saturday’s Anglo-Dutch Final, with the top finishers proceeding through to the Golden Helmet Final. The race started with 362 Shaw clipping the turn 1 marker tyres, and he pulled a massive wheelie as he spun on the bend. He was collected by 13 Ford, but amazingly did not roll, instead losing a wheel, which he rode over buckaroo style in a spectacular crash. The race was halted, with 158 Clement heading the restart. Clement was soon challenged by 13 Ford and 244 Mick Rogers, with the latter briefly taking the lead. However, he was soon passed by 338 Brocksopp off turn 2, with 1 Andy Smith and 515 Wainman then coming through to take over. 158 Clement hit the fence on turn 1, as 34 Brown put in a big hit on 390 Smith to send him wide on the Coventry bend, Smith coming back to fence Brown on turn 1. 1 Smith had got the better of 515 Wainman, and looked to be heading for victory, but on the last lap he tangled with 105 Bonner coming out of turn 2, forcing him towards the infield. 515 Wainman took over, with the recovered 1 Smith just too far back to put in a last bend challenge, 515 Wainman taking the win. Saturday’s Grand National was also run, with 55 Finnikin getting spun on turn 1 and shoved round to turn 2 by the pack. H61 Maris then clouted the turn 1 fence and rode round the armco to bring out the yellow flags. The restart saw a huge shunt into turn 1, with H32 Nijs getting stuffed hard into the fence, lifting three fence posts out of their sockets as he ended tangled in the wires with his aerofoil getting ripped off in a spectacular crash. The race was again halted, with Nijs getting untangled and the fence repaired. The restart was rather dusty, with some big hits going in with 249 Jonathan Gibson bumpering 107 Robinson hard, Robinson gaining revenge by thumping a backmarker hard into Gibson to spin him round. 390 Smith fenced 446 Booth on turn 3, as 91 Tony Smith stayed out of trouble to claim the win, as 249 Gibson front axle became dislodged in the latter stages and his car bounced round on the home straight to take a T-bone from 308 Steve Malkin Jnr. The first of Sunday meeting’s heats proper was up next, with a dramatic start as 258 Harrad clipped the turn 1 marker tyres and rolled over, with the following drivers managing to avoid him. The restart saw 307 Warwick collect the fence on turn 1 to briefly ride the armco, as H60 Maris swapped hits with 105 Bonner, Bonner eventually fencing Maris on turn 4. 13 Ford tangled with 54 Parkinson to crash out on the infield, as 214 Slater spun coming out of turn 4 and went headlong into the home straight fence. 111 Mike Williamson spun to hit the fence hard in reverse as the race was halted to check on Slater. 35 Shenton led the restart, but he was soon caught by 73 Cowley and 338 Brocksopp, and they overhauled him on turn 3. Cowley then opened up a gap over Brocksopp and went on for the win, as 105 Bonner again hit H60 Maris hard into turn 3. The Golden Helmet Final doubled up as heat 2, with the top finishers from the Final in the round at Emmen lining up against the top ten finishers in the Anglo-Dutch Final held earlier in the day, together with the next top 14 point scorers from Saturday’s meeting. This placed H217 Kroonder and 515 Wainman on the front row, with 1 Smith and H25 Paardenkooper on row 2. Kroonder and Wainman entered the first bend side by side, but Kroonder clipped the marker tyres to spin, causing a pile up with the fence taking another battering as H29 Greidanus piled into it to rip out a fence post. The necessary repairs were made, with 515 Wainman leading the restart from 1 Smith, 2 Harrison and 390 Smith. Wainman broke away from the restart, as a bundle at the rear of the field forced 158 Clement to collect the pit gate fence, and the race was again halted to check on him. 1 Smith chased 515 Wainman on the next restart, and found a way up the inside on turn 1 to go ahead, only to encounter backmarkers to allow Wainman back into the lead. 390 Smith buried H228 Wijbinga into 1 Smith to move into second, and set about trying to catch 515 Wainman. 390 Smith then dished out a huge hit to H67 Kandt into turn 1, Kandt collecting the fence to get his front bumper tangled in the wires and spin round. The race was halted once again in order to extract Kandt and mend the fence once again. The order for the next restart was 515 Wainman from 390 Smith, 1 Smith, 2 Harrison and 53 John Lund. 390 Smith smacked 515 Wainman two laps running, only to go wide off turn 2. 1 Smith moved back into second, with 2 Harrison and 390 Smith right behind, before a big shunt saw 390 Smith go back into the lead with 53 Lund moving into second. 515 Wainman then hit 53 Lund wide into turn 1 to regain second place, as 390 Smith went on to take the win. 1 Smith drilled 515 Wainman hard into the last bend, the pair going wide for 53 Lund to go underneath them to steal second with 1 Smith coming home third to end a superb race, one of the best of the F1 season. Heat 3 kicked off with 192 Luke Dennis and 212 Danny Wainman collecting the turn 1 marker tyres, with Wainman spinning to stall to cause a stoppage. 415 Cooper led the restart, before he was passed by 330 Wagstaff. 446 Booth then challenged Wagstaff for the lead and eventually got by, only for Wagstaff to come back to take the front spot. 249 Gibson then barged past 446 Booth for second, before Booth got the better of Gibson a couple of laps later. 415 Cooper spun for 480 Garry Fox to collect him, as 330 Wagstaff took the flag. 158 Clement led the consolation, as a pile up on turn 2 saw 242 Nickolls T-bone his brother in 215. 220 Mike Andrew then challenged Clement for the lead and took over, as H32 Nijs smacked the turn 1 fence hard. 111 Williamson also went into the fence in the same place a few laps later, as 498 Taylor passed 158 Clement and then 220 Andrew for the lead. 55 Finnikin fenced 462 Davids on the last bend, as 498 Taylor claimed the win. The Final started with a big shunt amongst the star drivers, causing 515 Wainman to be spun. There followed a bundle on the home straight in the pack, before the yellow flags came out with 301 Allen stuck in the middle of the back straight. 244 Rogers led the restart, before being overhauled by 34 Brown, with 53 Lund moving into second to give chase. 4 Daniel Johnson put in the bumper hard on 390 Smith in the battle for third, as 53 Lund put in a big hit to 34 Brown to take over the lead. 390 Smith then went hard into the turn 1 fence, as 4 Johnson moved into second place and started catching 53 Lund. The gap closed right up in the latter stages, but Lund stayed ahead to claim his first Final win of the year. The National saw some early shunts, with both Smiths and 515 Wainman clashing on turn 1, 390 Smith riding over Wainman’s bonnet, forcing 1 Smith and 515 Wainman to retire to the infield. 335 Woodhull soon came through to lead, as 2 Harrison held off hits from 107 Robinson for several laps, before Robinson got by. 4 Johnson then bumpered Robinson wide to move into third, as 390 Smith suffered a flat rear and retired to the infield. 84 Tom Harris reeled in 335 Woodhull and shoved him wide on turn 1 to take over the lead and on for the win. Overall, a good weekend’s racing, with the unfortunate problems of the pothole on Saturday night actually adding some spice and spectacular action to the racing on the Sunday with the marker tyres on the entrance to turn 1. The track staff, drivers and Frankie Wainman Snr, in particular, did a great job of temporarily solving an unforeseeable problem, and it is thanks to them that the racing went ahead at all. The World Final race was next, with most of the qualifiers gridding, 3 Chris Fort and defending champion 131 Kevin Stutchbury on the front row, with 575 Darren Cottrill and 81 Matt Smith on row 2, while row 3 was the two aforementioned New Zealanders. The outside line was rather slippery from a pre-meeting rain shower, with 3 Fort making a good start, as a pile up developed, which grew on the next lap as 237 Daz Parker spun on turn 1, followed by 147 Colin Taylor and NZ95 Dale Stewart, with 151 Jeff Colledge and 430 Paul Stevens also getting involved. The yellow flags came out to check on 430 Stevens and clear the track, with a number of drivers unable to make the restart including NZ95 Stewart, 131 Stutchbury, 147 Taylor, 151 Colledge, 184 Carl Boswell, 331 Jay Beaumont, 361 Steve Reedman and 430 Stevens. 3 Fort headed the restart from 81 Smith and 575 Cottrill, with some backmarkers mingled between these three. Fort made another good start to break away, as 75 Terry Hawkins was stuffed hard into turn 1. 473 Chris Bracher was putting in the bumper, and went in hard on 178 Richard Burt and then 281 Lee Summers. 575 Cottrill ran into the spun 187 Craig Smith, as 75 Hawkins was buried into the turn 3 fence. 3 Fort built up a good lead and went on to take the title ahead of 81 Matt Smith and 575 Cottrill. Heat 1 was soon stopped after the white graders got into a muddle, with 151 Colledge being spun, for a restart. 117 Rob Scriven soon led, as 42 Rob Barber, 355 Bryan Andrew and 81 Smith had a good battle after Smith had briefly hooked up on Barber’s nerf rail. 497 Marc Holmes spun and T-boned 314 Steve Bowman on turn 4, as a pothole started developing on turn 1, and got worse as the race progressed. NZ8 Frederickson overhauled 117 Scriven for the lead, Frederickson going on to take the win, as the battle for second went to the last bend with 9 Andy Hulse going in to bumper 131 Stuchbury, Hulse in turn getting a dose of bumper from 575 Cottrill. The pothole, which had got even worse from the F1 heats, had been filled in once again for heat 2, which started with 75 Hawkins collecting the turn 3 marker tyres. The pothole soon started coming back, as 473 Bracher got stuck on a marker tyre. 314 Bowman and 187 Smith spun on turn 1, before 75 Hawkins was stuffed into Smith by 473 Bracher. 497 Holmes and the leading 315 Rob Shackleton got tangled on the back straight, Shackleton managing to break free to stay in the lead, before NZ8 Frederickson went by and claimed his second win of the evening. With the problem of the pothole on turn 1, it was decided to postpone the meeting Final until the start of Sunday’s racing. For the Sunday, the pothole was filled in and marker tyres put in place to cover it, with Saturday’s Final the first race run. This saw 328 Michael Boswell and 331 Beaumont spin on the home straight, as a couple spun on turn 1 with 75 Hawkins hitting the fence. The marker tyres were clipped causing 187 Smith to spin, before the race was halted with for a broken fence post. 269 Mike Lomax led the restart, but he was soon passed by NZ8 Frederickson, as 9 Hulse was fenced on turn 1. 575 Cottrill then challenged NZ8 Frederickson for the lead, as 473 Bracher clipped the turn 1 marker tyres to go into a full roll for another stoppage. Frederickson still led for the restart, as 575 Cottrill dropped back a little, with 131 Stuchbury taking over second place. 9 Hulse and 81 Smith went fencebound on turn 4 after trading hits, as 131 Stuchbury closed on NZ8 Frederickson, only to then clip the marker tyres to spin on the last lap, allowing Frederickson to take a hattrick of wins. 269 Lomax set the pace in heat 1, as 328 Boswell and 331 Beaumont again tangled and spun onto the infield. A close scrap for the lead then developed, with 147 Taylor, 575 Cottrill, 184 Boswell and NZ8 Frederickson all involved, before 3 Fort caught the front runners and swept into the lead. However, Fort then spun on turn 1 and lost a number of places, with 184 Boswell and 575 Cottrill taking over the fight for the lead. Cottrill eventually got the better of Boswell and made the break to take the win, while Boswell and NZ8 Frederickson battled over second place before being passed by 210 Matt Smith. The second heat commenced with 9 Hulse collecting the marker tyres to spin, as 184 Boswell was squeezed into the back straight armco. 237 Parker and 75 Hawkins tangled on the back straight leading to a stoppage, with 222 Guy Jolly heading the restart. 473 Bracher spun on turn 1, as 131 Stuchbury used his front bumper to move up the places. NZ8 Frederickson was bundled wide, as NZ95 Stewart rode the home straight fence, with the race being halted to remove the stranded Bracher from the racing line. 222 Jolly was overhauled on the restart, for 575 Cottrill, 147 Taylor and 3 Fort to scrap over the lead. Fort half spun, allowing Cottrill into the front spot, but Fort recovered and forced Cottrill wide to take over before opening up a gap. 237 Parker swapped hits with 187 Smith, as 300 Tom Storry fenced 75 Hawkins on turn 1. NZ8 Frederickson clipped the tyres to get collected by 187 Smith, as 3 Fort went on to take the chequered. The World Masters Final saw a closed up grid, still in grades, with 178 Burt spinning on the home straight. 3 Fort soon worked his way through the places to lead by lap 4. NZ8 Frederickson rode over 9 Hulse’s front wheel in the battle for second, before getting shoved from halfway along the back straight and into turn 3 broadside. 575 Cottrill and 161 Mark Allen battled for second, albeit half a lap adrift of the leading 3 Fort. 473 Bracher and 9 Hulse hooked up, as 3 Fort took his third win of the weekend. The Shale Shifter Supreme doubled up as heat 1, with 23 Mark Rodgers and 67 Andy Passey on the front row, 844 Nathan Etheridge and 25 Anthony Masters making up row 2. There was a big push into the first bend, on a rather slippery track due to a rain shower, with 23 Rodgers going wide. 2 Tony McCarthy came out of the bend in the lead, as 47 Mark Slingsby got caught up in a turn 3 melee to complete a full roll. The race was halted, with 17 Lee Cooke chasing the leading 2 McCarthy on the restart. Cooke found a way through on the inside, only for McCarthy to come back and retake the lead. 17 Cooke shoved the backmarking 46 Nathan Tye into turn 3 as he tried to stay with McCarthy, Tye riding over 216 Matthew Hyde as 17 Cooke went wide. The race was again halted for the fenced 188 Mike Kingston, with 2 McCarthy leading the restart and 17 Cooke still in second. 43 Barry Heath spun and T-boned 15 Eric Hayden, as Cooke again closed on McCarthy, only to get hindered by backmarkers. Cooke then spun on turn 3, where he was collected by 43 Heath, as 2 McCarthy went on for the win, Cooke recovering to claim second place. Heat 2 followed on, with 2 McCarthy flying and putting in the bumper to move up the places, with 23 Rodgers and 43 Heath on the receiving end. 5 Stuart Mackinnon built up a useful lead, but 361 Steve Shaw and 2 McCarthy then started closing the gap in the second half of the race. 361 Shaw bumpered 5 Mackinnon to take over, Mackinnon’s car then starting to smoke and he was forced onto the infield. 2 McCarthy overhauled 361 Shaw with a couple of laps to run, only to then lose time shifting the backmarking 844 Etheridge on turn 1. However, McCarthy was still in the lead, but Shaw now had the opportunity to put in the bumper on the last bend. However, the spun 34 Peter Kettle forced both drivers to take a wide line round the bend, with McCarthy getting traction first on the slippery outside line and he took his second win of the evening. The Brandon Superbowl Final had an early stoppage for the spun 786 John Hoole. 2 McCarthy hit 67 Passey wide on the restart for the lead, as 47 Slingsby spun off turn 4, joined by several others. 361 Shaw, 17 Cooke and 53 Graham Charlesworth got involved in a close scrap for second, before Charlesworth made the break. 844 Etheridge then joined Cooke and Shaw in the fight for third place, as 188 Kingston hit the fence. 53 Charlesworth then ran into a spun backmarker to lose places, as 2 McCarthy went on to take his third win of the evening. This left just four cars running, with 12 Deeming attacking 240 Bennett, before 40 Jacom weighed into Deeming to take him out. Jacom went on to hit 240 Bennett, the latter coming under fire from 751 Swinfield. 99 Anthony Booth then fired back up, only to take a massive T-bone in the rear wing from 240 Bennett. The final knockings came down to 751 Swinfield and 240 Bennett, with Bennett spinning Swinfield. 19 Frankland then rejoined the event, having been out for some time, with the event being called at this point and Bennett declared the winner. However, Frankland still dished out a head-on to 751 Swinfield, before attacking 240 Bennett, with the red flags then coming out.
