23/11/09 Peggyann Lilley has been in touch with news of the Legends....

FAREWELL TO THE 2009 SEASON

Clive Marchant photo www.gridart.deviantart.com

Oval Track Legends will be out in force at Ipswich this Sunday afternoon for the Golden Helmet Award, their final race meeting of 2009. It is a non-points round and 29 drivers are booked to appear at the Foxhall Heath Raceway. Also on the race card are the Stock Rods and Lightning Rods which should make for an excellent day of winter racing when the green flag drops at 1pm.

Among those booked in are current Champions, Ian Hales (National Points and National Champion), Daniel Holden (British Champion) and Branson Poyner (Rookie of the Year and Master Division winner) but with the competition being so hot this year, it’s anyone’s guess as to who will take the trophy home.

  23/11/09 News from Rob Daines...

ANGMERING DRIVERS BRAVE THE ELEMENTS

A day of torrential rain and high winds could not curb the drivers at Angmering raceway on Sunday November 22nd as the drivers took to a track that had more in common with a pond than a racing circuit.

All of the formulas struggled in the harsh conditions, with the front wheel drive saloon rods being the best placed to deal with the rain lashed track. Dean Archer had a fantastic day’s racing in the formula, narrowly missing a clean sweep of both heats and the final with two first places and one second.

Among the junior drivers 158, Lewy Richardson steered through the deluge to win the junior production class, with 180 Kieron Chappell, taking the top spot in the junior rods.

Despite all the rain one of the hot rods still managed to catch fire leading to the race being re-run with 306 Jack Morgan taking the final.

The rear wheel drive saloon rods and street stocks struggled dreadfully with the conditions but 724 Stephen Wright came through to win in the saloon rods with 587, Jim Stewart doing the same in the street stocks.

The production stocks saw wins for 212, Lee Potter in the senior and 595

Racing action returns to Angmering for the Christmas bash on December 13th with the hugely entertaining nudge and spin bangers taking part in the Santa Slaughter to raise money for the Chestnut Tree Children’s Hospice.
Angmering is located just off the A280, between Worthing and Angmering. The gates open at 8am, with racing commencing at 11.30am. Adult admission is £10 kids, 10-14, £5, with kids under ten free. Senior Citizens, disabled and Students (with valid student cards) can also enjoy a days racing for just £5.

64 new Clive Marchant Photographs!!!
Clive Marchant takes brilliant photographs and has very kindly supplied me with a large number of examples of his work. Clive isn't interested in selling photo's and indeed doesn't have the time to deal with requests for prints etc. but is always interested in being commissioned and really wants the maximum number of people to be able to enjoy his artistic efforts. Every week or two I will be displaying a different meeting as seen through Clive's lens. This week we have the first part of a huge number of pictures from the Ipswich meeting of 4th July 2009 (64 pictures). You can see these pictures by clicking here.

Clive produces some amazing art work and more examples of his work can be found at www.gridart.deviantart.com

19/11/09 Steve Esau has been in touch with some very sad news about his Uncle...

I have some sad news to tell and have been asked if it can be put on the website. My Uncle Jim suddenly passed away yesterday morning. As most people know Jim or "Big Jim" as he was affectionately known was one of the top star grade drivers in Brisca Formula One Stock Car Racing during the late 1960's and early 1970's, winning many accolades particularly winning the World Championship at Harringay in 1970. The Funeral will take place at North Devon Crematorium Old Torrington Road Barnstaple North Devon EX31 3NW at 12.00 midday Friday 27th November 2009. Family Flowers Only. 22/11/09 The F1 final at Birmingham last night went to 321(E, Neachell), 390(S Smith), 2(P Harrison) & H399

22/11/09 I recently read the sad  item below on the Grand Prix Midget news group that was written by Richard Neil, I hope that he won't mind me reproducing it on the off chance that someone reading this site might be able to help....

I had contact from the BBC today who make a series about missing people - sadly it seems Malcolm Goodman, Multi Midget Champ and 1973 Hot Rod English Champion went missing from the nursing home he was living in back in September. A long shot posting on here but if anyone does have any info would they obviously please get in touch.

16/11/09 We have had some sad news from David Kipling...

"Jumbo" Tustin, #179, properly known as Gerald Ralph Tustin, passed away on Saturday 14th November, at his home in Cheltenham. From 1957 to 1966 Jumbo generated cheers and laughs for his vigorous antics, odd-looking cars, and his big wide grin. In latter years, Jumbo busied himself happily in his workshop, juggling welding kits and mugs of tea, while wearing a battered hat, and generally looking like Heartbeat's "Claude Greengrass". On his 82nd birthday last December, his ex-mechanic Roger Harris presented Jumbo with two lovely framed photographs from the chequered Tustin career.

Fans who remember Jumbo might give a wink to his memory and our combined wishes to his wife Betty.

15/11/09 The National Unlimited Banger World final took place at Ipswich on Saturday 14th November and the results was 1st 82 Paul Tompkins, 2nd Steve Bailey and 3rd 298 Sam Wyatt.

15/11/09 The December issue of Short Circuit Magazine is out now. Paul Huggett looks back at the 2009 season and takes a bite at Wimbledon. What an interesting article about Superstox star Ben Marjoram. Cowdenbeath always seems to bring out the best racing from all drivers and the Stock Rod World Final Weekend was no exception. The event is covered in detail in words and pictures. If you want to see some of the most spectacular crashes that have taken place recently don't miss "One of those days!". Fantastic, before they get bent, cars are featured in the hottest racers but no ICE. See what happened on the first bend of the F2 World Final (and during the rest of the race). As always the mag. is an excellent read, click the link below to get your subscription or single issue (or get it from many tracks). Click here to subscribe, or you can buy this issue, online . Don't forget that Short Circuit now comes out every month of the year.

13/11/09 Nik Eastwood has been in touch with this news...

Just a quick email to let you know of a new site covering the UK Modifieds, its at www.ukmodifieds.co.uk and will have all the info needed on this new upcoming formula, more cars are arriving from the USA in January and there will be a good line up of drivers for season 2010 including 3 members of the Finnikin family from Leek, Staffs

'Stock Car Racing is Magic' Issue 1 is now available from spedeworth raceways and is a superb pictorial looking back at the 'Cross In Hand Raceway' and with over 200 photos, many never published before, will stir many memories of the excellent and sadly missed track down in deepest East Sussex.

The pictorial has been created and published by Dean Cox and Dave Baldwin (Graphics by Dave), and produced not only to celebrate the 50th anniversary of Spedeworth next year, but just as importantly, a tribute to the memory and life through the lense of 'Fred Buss', one of spedeworths photographers of the late 60s up until his retirement around 1980.

A donation from every copy of 'Stock Car Racing is Magic' will go to Cancer Research, and whilst published earlier than planned, more issues are designed and ready for publication with issue 2 due out at easter next year, featuring more classic photos from fred's collection covering Arlington, Wimbledon and Spedeweekends from those memorable days.

Dean Cox and Dave Baldwin hope you will support and thoroughly enjoy this fantastic trip down memory lane, the cost of each issue available at £2.50

The magazine is now available by post at £3 including p+p, with cheques being made payable to D.R. COX

The second issue of ‘Oval Track Classic’ is out. As soon as you open the pages of this issue you’ll be impressed by the masses of colour and black & white pictures from yester year. 1972 was a crucial year for the Hot Rods, read what happened that year and see the pictures of the many and varied types of car that were running as Hot Rods. Be prepared to be amazed by the number of spectators at the meetings. ‘Lost tracks and stadiums’ takes a look at Aghadowey. Graham Brown continues with the popular ‘collectors corner’. The ‘Classic Modifieds’ are a ‘modern formula that utilises older body shells, the cars look superb and there is an in depth look at the formula in this issue. Handled correctly I’m sure that this is a formula we could all be seeing a lot more. Over the next few issues follow the building of an Historic Saloon Stock, you may be motivated to have a go yourself! Andrew Welch reminds us of the late great Spence Morgan, a legend of the west country. Those of you that have been going to Spedeworth meeting for as long as me will remember the name Roger Fenning but did you know all about his musical exploits, read why he was also a ‘guitar hero’. Once again this is just a flavour of the great article in this issue. Whether you were there to see it all unfold those years ago and it’s trip down memory lane or whether you missed it all first time around, you will find this magazine absolutely fascinating. As I mentioned previously Oval Track Classic is more like a book, with so much content more than a magazine but available at a magazine price (cover price £3.80 or for a UK subscription price, for the four quarterly issues, of £15.20) Click here to order.

5/8/09 The August edition of
Autograss Review is out now.  The next issue is due out during 15th August. Nasa issues immediate tyre rule changes that could save competitors money. Details for two meetings at Belle Vue finalised. Bans for two drivers are under appeal. The technical round-up makes fascinating reading for for anyone interested in what's under the skin of the cars. What is the future of the 'mini' in Class 1? The Stock Hatch Nationals has a full report. A report from Evesham covers the Stu Nicholls Memorial Meeting and the all Ireland meeting from Carlow is another of the meetings covered. F600 gets a 'half term' report. For a cover price of £2.50 this has to be brilliant value. For details of where to subscribe etc to Autograss Review click here.

14/6/09 Great weather, great racing, what more could you want. The meeting today at Aldershot had the lot, the Superstox British Championship was won by 482 Jason Cooper on the last bend of the last lap. 602 Dale Fewings had led the race and looked to be going to hold on for the win but Jason Cooper, last years British Champ., didn't want to have to change the sign writing and timed his hit to perfection. 116 John Smith had a great meeting winning his two heats and coming third in the championship, he looks certain to be a red grade next grading period. The Championship was only open to the top 30 points scorers on the day, so the heats were hard fought over and I felt that this greatly added to the excitement. Even with a few people like Pip Williams, Steve Jackson (who I understand recently had an engine problem) and Gary Sparkes missing, there was a brilliant quality field of over 40 cars, this really shows the current strength of the superstox formula. I can't wait to see 'em again.

8/03/09 I have recently been lucky enough to get my hands on a copy of the Spedeworth 'Complete Guide to Racing 2009'. This is much more than just a Spedeworth fixture list, although it certainly does contain a list of the fixtures. However it also contains a mass of information like breakdowns of meetings by formulas and series. This is a book you'll want to keep handy all through 2009, pick up your FREE copy at the Spedeworth tracks.

29/12/08 Over Christmas I obtained a copy of Richard Neil's latest book. "Those were the days... Hot Rod & Stockcar Racing in Britain in the 1980's" was not only a book that I couldn't put down but one that I'm sure is going to appeal to a very wide range of readers. There's a huge number of brilliant colour photo's that are accompanied by masses of interesting insights into the sport in the 80's. If like me, you may have been there, and so much enjoy reminiscing, or you may want to see why this period is looked back on as being so great. For the casual reader there are a huge number of photo's from each year of the decade and for the 'anorak' there are lists of title winners. This is a real value for money book and whether you read it from cover to cover, dip into it or use it as a wonderful reference work I feel sure that you will enjoy it. The book is available for £13.99 inc postage from RJ Neil, PO Box 1670, Croydon, Surrey, CR9 1TU or online from www.ovaltrack.co.uk .
