11/5/08 The May edition of
Autograss Review
is out now, 68 pages packed with
info. and relevant adverts.
Tyre controversy is still rumbling along. On the 30th April there were 509
entries for the BAS. Sky TV to cover the nationals, read the details. As usual
there are lots of great pictures and the standard of preparation amongst the
specials seems particularly high. A trip or two to the stadiums reveals that
several former grassers are to be found in F2's and superstox. "Back page
stuff..." has a series of pictures from a very spectacular crash that left a
class 6 car looking very sorry for itself! The next edition is due to publish on
31st May 2008. For a cover price of £2 this
has to be brilliant value.

Read
what the Lynn News had to say about a recent meeting at Kings Lynn.
8/5/08 When the
Superstox had their first outing at the new Aldershot raceway Stephen Jackson
took the English Championship. He was followed home by World Champion Shaun
Brooker and Colin Alyward. Once again there was a good crowd at the track and it
seems that it's a big hit with the spectators and drivers alike.
4/5/08 Derek has
sent us a text to say that the Saloon English Championship that was held at St
Day was won by 186 who was followed home by 511 & 499. Thanks Derek.
3/5/08 The latest
edition of

from car. What is the long term future for St Day? F2 star Barry Goldin takes
over the guest column and puts forward some interesting ideas on the possible
future for Oval racing. The F2 technical committee make changes to the rules
regarding chassis. F2 ace to have three F1 outings this year. Things at the top
of the F1 points chart is extremely close. Pete Randall interviews Graham

at Coventry. Loads of news and results etc. The next edition of the mag. will be

2/5/08 The May Edition of
Unloaded 7.3 Magazine
is out now.
Lets hope that scenes like the one on the contents page, where the F2 are seen
racing in the snow, are not going to be repeated this year :-). The 'Gold
Dust' F2 World qualifying rounds article covers Bristol and Sheffield. The
tourist guide makes it's way out west to Cornwall and the St Day track. It has
some great pictures and interesting facts about both the track and Cornwall in
general. The 'Crashtastic' pictures reveal just what an action packed start
there has been to 2008 for both the F2's and the Saloons. Over Easter a good
number of F2's managed to race at Northampton and Skegness on the same day plus
some Scottish Saloons carried on from Northampton to Cornwall, read who did
what. Tickets are on sale for the F2 World Final and a form for discounted
advance tickets is included with this issue. As usual the mag. contains
all the statistics for the F2's and the Saloons. If like me you like BriSCA F2's
and/or 2L Stock Saloons pick the mag up at a track or subscribe,
see my magazine page for details.

30/4/08 Carlton Elliott
has kindly sent us the latest details of the
winners
and of the points totals for the F2 2008
Central League.
28/4/08 I heard today that, sadly, Eddie
Freeman, ex superstox driver 255, lost his battle against cancer and has passed
away. Our thoughts go out to his family.
28/4/08 Despite huge numbers of race fans being attracted to the opening meeting
at the new Aldershot track there was still a good number at Bovingdon. The rain
stayed away and it was a superb meeting for the Superstox, Legends, Bangers and
Ninja Karts. Superstox races were won by 376, 36 & 94, the first race had 39
runners and all races were to say the least hectic! The Legend races were also
amazingly exciting with a number of cars finishing up more than a little bent.
Race winners were 98, 156, 100 and 100 again. Bovingdon provides some of the
most action packed racing that you will see anywhere.
You can
see my pictures from the event by clicking here.
27/4/08 Mark have been in contact from the track at Kings Lynn to tell us that
the 2L Saloon Stockcars British Championship was won by 219 Luke Grief from 428,
511, 499, 328, 18, 71, 401, 311, 149. A later message said that 428 failed
scrutineering and was reported to the SSC board of control (Reason unknown)
27/4/08
If you want to know how to find the Aldershot track I have added details to the
Contacts page.
26/4/08
The May issue of
Wheelspin, the
official Spedeworth Magazine, is out now. For £3.00 this mag. is great value.
This issue has some great pictures and words about the original Aldershot track.
Also if you are wondering how to find your way to the new Aldershot track the
mag. will make it easy for you. There's a roundup of the Easter meetings. Banger
driver gets a ban after a Bovingdon incident. Guest columnist Kevin Wegg writes
a very entertaining article, hopefully he will be back with more soon. Don't
miss the very interesting letter from the father of a banned Stock Car driver
and the equally interesting reply from Deane Wood. The Superstox go from
strength to strength and Dan Smith's self built car is a great example that is
featured in this edition. Speaking of super's Mark Kelman is back and is
pictured in the mag. There's no make weight articles in Wheelspin, it's all
action. All this is only a flavour of the masses of Spedeworth
info. that's in Wheelspin, don't miss it. For all this and much much more, pickup the mag at a Spedeworth track.

23/4/08 STOCK CAR
DRIVERS (Third Edition) NOW AVAILABLE

Cover of the third
edition.
The third edition of Stock Car Drivers has just been published. It lists 4,686
Formula One Stock Car drivers who have registered in the 50 years since national
numbering was introduced in 1957.
The book is split into two sections, one alphabetical (from Willie Abberley to
Jan Zuk), and one numerical (from 0 to 998), and it gives details of the
drivers, their home town, the years they registered and a note as to whether
they raced under different numbers. The book runs to 123-pages and also includes
a photo tribute to 2007 retirees – Danny Clarke (203), Frankie Wainman (212) and
Howard Davis (327).
The book is something that you will pick up again and again and discover new and
interesting facts. For instance, apart from a few exceptions, racing numbers
between 1957 and 2007 have been in the series 0 to 550. In this series racing
numbers 528, 530,535,540,543,544 and 550 have only been issued once whilst
numbers 539, 541, 542 and 545 to 549 have never been issued. In contrast number
94 has been issued 18 times but this is outstripped by number 300 which has been
issued no less that 22 times!
The year 1957 perhaps reflected a more colourful era in the sport given the
following selection of names – 27 Crasher Allen, 34 Smasher Smailes, 81 Killer
Sayers, 159 Bombshell Barrett, 160 Atomic Albert, 216 Homicide Hayden, 321
Whizzer Wilson, and the fact that 194 PG Woolfgang gave his home town as
Siberia! Mind 1960 registered driver 483 Rat Face Ferrell, from the USA, also
sounds quite menacing.
The third edition of “Stock Car Drivers” is available from Photostox, 17
Willingham Close, Sothall, Sheffield, S20 2PD at £20 including £2.50 postage and
packing, or you can arrange to collect a copy at tracks by e-mailing Mike
Greenwood
(mike@photostox.demon.co.uk ) or calling him on (0114) 248 9166.
19/4/08 Steve Fraser has sent us a rather alarming piece of news that the
council that owns St Day Raceway may be selling the land.

17/4/08 HERBERT WINS AND RICHARDSON TALKS ABOUT IT!
The inaugural Speedcar championship season drew to a gripping close on
Saturday 12 April at the Dubai Autodrome in UAE, with British driver Johnny
Herbert taking the title! It was Herbert's second race win of the weekend that
sealed him the Speedcar Series Championship and the winners share of a $3million
prize fund!
Throughout the first
season the Worldwide TV commentary voice has been the renowned British Oval
Racing TV Presenter Dave Richardson...
“Speedcar was always going to be massive, with household names like Jean Alesi,
Johnny Herbert and Gianni Morbidelli in the line up, with others like Jacques
Villeneuve and Heinz Harald Frentzen joining in too”
“It was a REAL baptism of fire, particularly when I was told that in addition to
the V8 Speedcars I’d have to voice the GP2 Asia series too. Up until now the
only knowledge I had of single seater racing was Legends, Superstox or BriSCA
F1/F2!”
The series has seen Dave cover some 50000 air miles in a packed 10 weeks,
jetting off to Dubai, Indonesia, Malaysia and Bahrain (in support to F1), and
Dubai for the finals.
“Being at a race circuit at a Formula 1 race weekend was a big thrill! I
remember some years ago Martin Brundle parked next to me at Yarmouth Stadium;
well Lewis Hamilton did the same at the Sepang circuit!”
Dave is hoping that he will continue his TV commentary on the Asian and Middle
Eastern TV network for Speedcar season 2, and in the meantime more TV Presenter
engagements beckon for Oval and Autograss racing during the season here in the
UK.

“Wheelie Wild” Car Rally Raises Funds for Kids’ Mobility
The Scumball 3000 Rally, a charity drive across Europe in unusual cars is
backing national mobility charity Whizz-Kidz this year – raising cash for young
people’s powered wheelchairs and skills training.
Sub-titled “This time it’s triball!” - the annual four-day team challenge will
test drivers’ skills and agility, and must be completed in cars that cost no
more than £500. However, there are no limits on the modifications entrants can
do to their cars – the more outlandish, the better.
To enter, each Scumball team raises £500 for Whizz-Kidz. The money will benefit
the many young disabled people the charity supports; building their independence
and confidence through vital mobility equipment and wheelchair skills training.
Ashley Westpfel, Regional Fundraising Manager at Whizz-Kidz says:
“We are really excited to be the chosen charity of Scumball 3000 for 2008. The
challengers’ wheels will be essential to them completing the course, and the
£50k set to be raised will help many more young people get the “wheels” they
need to be independent and achieve their own personal goals. It really expresses
the freedom and excitement that Whizz-Kidz is all about!”
Ed White, Director of Scumball 3000 said:
“Scumball 3000 is proud to have chosen Whizz-Kidz as our nominated charity for
the Triball 2008 event. With over 100 cars participating, we are hopeful that we
can beat previous targets and change lives in the process. Having elected
children’s charities for the previous events it was a one horse race when
deciding which charity to partner us for 2008 - Whizz-Kidz met all of our
criteria. We will continue year on year to give something back to charities in
the UK who rely on fundraising like ours.”
The Scumball 3000 launch party takes place at Arena Essex on 17 April at 6pm –
with free entry. Spectators can see all the cars taking part during a parade
lap. There will also be demonstration races from ‘Lightning’ Rods’ - a formula
of oval circuit racing - and Banger cars in action to entertain the crowds. The
Scumball challengers then make their way to Dover – the first leg on their
European adventure. They return to the UK on 22 April.
For more information on Scumball 3000, visit
www.scumball3000.co.uk . Whizz-Kidz

Spedeworth have let me
know that they have had sad news about Ex Stock Car driver 402 Brian Sayers. He
passed away on Sunday after a short illness. Brian was a quiet & reserved driver
who just got on with his racing. He raced in the 70's with the likes of Eddie
George, Foxy Dance and Spedeworth promoter Deane Wood. Deane said that he
remembers Brian very well from those early day's.

14/12/07 The Spedeworth
Historic Saloon Stockcars have been a huge success in 2007. The cars were
certainly no museum pieces and often got well stuck in. The formula looks set to
go from strength to strength next year and I believe that it will have a
slight name change, they will be known as Classic rather than Historic, this
seems to be more in keeping with their all action approach to racing.
2/12/07 Graham
Alexander has been in touch with some interesting news about Cowdenbeath....
Plans to replace Central Park with a state-of-the-art 3000-seater stadium have
hit the buffers.
Cowdenbeath Football Club agreed a £2 million deal for the sale of the ground to
Irvine-based developer McCartney Homes in February.
The cash was earmarked for a new stadium on the outskirts of the town.
The developer applied to Fife Council for outline planning permission to build a
supermarket. Tesco was thought to be eyeing the site.
But, at the eleventh hour, McCartney Homes withdrew the application from under
the noses of councillors who were set to block the ambitious proposals at
Cowdenbeath Area Committee on Wednesday, 28th November.
Fife Council's planners recommended that councillors refuse the application
because the site is earmarked for leisure facilities in the Local Plan.
Council planner, Bob Steedman, explained: "The Cowdenbeath Area Local Plan
identifies the site as being for community leisure facilities because of its
present use as a football club and lies outwith the defined town centre. Given
this, the proposal is considered to be contrary to aims of the Local Plan.
"The Council is committed to encouraging convenience development as part of the
redevelopment of demolished buildings in Cowdenbeath Town Centre. Further major
convenience stores or extensions outside the existing town centres will not be
consistent with the strategy of this Local Plan."
In February, Cowdenbeath chairman Gordon McDougall revealed the club were
already in talks with the council to identify a site for a new stadium complex.
He described his vision, which would include a 3000-seat ground, a modern
artificial grass pitch and hospitality facilities.
Mr McDougall said this week: "Through discussions with planners the advice has
been that, in line with the current zoning, Central Park is for leisure use.
"We have been advised that the only way to change that is through the Local
Plan."
26/11/07 Recently a new
Banger Magazine has come out. It's called
'Mayhem'
and it's aimed at all Banger fans, from Rookies to Nationals. Two things that
you immediately notice about this mag. are that it's in full colour (every page)
and that the cover price is only £2 (£2.50 by post). It's not intended that the
mag. should replace the currently available mags. but that it should complement
them. It concentrates on features and contains masses of colour pictures. The
Pilot issue has, for example, articles on, millionaire racer Mikey Carroll,
Jason Jackson, Lance Webb, Edward Kennett, Tim James and a well remembered name
from the past Mick "Hulk" Davis. There are picture specials on the Eastbourne
Gala Night, six!! pages on the Firecracker and a tribute to the late Barry
Collins. On the news front there is an interview with promoter Deane Wood, a
write up on Layhams Farm track and diary items from the Bricknell family. I'm
not sure how they can produce all this and in colour for £2 but if you are a
Banger fan then this mag. is well worth a look. Get it from the tracks or by
post for £2.50 from Senlac Communications Ltd, 4 Mayo Rise, Bexhill-on-Sea, East
Sussex, TN39 5DB.

16/11/07 News from Mile
Greenwood....
Mike Greenwood is pleased to announce that Photostox and Dutch partners ASF have
again produced a F1 Stock Car Calendar. Whilst we can’t promise many half naked
ladies we can promise top quality race car shots from the best of the UK and
Dutch stock car photographers. The 2008 Calendar is now available and like the
previous eight editions any profits will go to maintaining the Photostox Photo
Archive of almost 200,000 images and the F1 Stock Car Drivers Database.
You can order your 2008 Calendar now from Photostox (Dept. ROP), 17 Willingham
Close, Sothall, Sheffield. S20 2PD. The cost is the same as last year - £13.00
by post (cheque’s made payable to Photostox please) or £10 from around the
tracks.
Reference was made above about the Stock Car Drivers Database. This year marks
the 50th anniversary of nationally registered stock car drivers/numbers.
Accordingly, we have chosen to hang on to include the 2007 registered drivers in
the new edition of the “F1 Stock Car Drivers Register”. When the second edition
was completed in 2004 with 4,184 entries, it was thought that we were getting
pretty close to noting all drivers that had registered. However, through the
dedication of some very enthusiastic race historians, and especially Granville
Holmes, the listing has now grown by an extra 474 drivers to 4,658! Also a lot
of further information about existing entries has also been added. We will have
to move pretty quickly after the Brisca/BSCDA Gala Meeting on 1st December but
are hopeful of having the new edition available by mid-December. Drop us a line
if you would like to be kept posted of developments.
8/11/07 I have just
received Mike Greenwood brilliant 2008 calendar, as usual it features F1
Stockcars. The cover alone is worth the cost! It has many superb photo's in full
colour, photography at it's best. Cars from the UK and Holland are included and
the text is in both English and Dutch. Therefore this is a great item for fans
from both sides of the Channel. You can contact Mike on UK phone number 0114
2489166 or at 17 Willingham Close, Sothall, Sheffield S20 2PD or by email at

5/11/07 Derek Smith lets us know that there will be a swap meet at Wimbledon on
Best of Britain night 25 of November, loads of vintage programs and magazines to
buy, sell or swap. Don't miss it.
29/10/07 Shaun Brooker (69 from Norwich) is the new Superstox World
Champion. The World Final was held at Wimbledon on Sunday 28th October in pretty
wet conditions.

The conditions didn't improve for the Howard Cole Memorial race. The trophy was
taken after an action packed race by Colin Aylward (#51 from Crowland).
7/10/07
Danny Fiske (304) was out for the
first time in a beautifully prepared 2L Hot Rod at Bovingdon. Although the car
didn't appear in the major places it will no doubt soon be sorted.

Rick Young sends in some
very interesting tales and his account of the F1 split of the '70's is certainly
one of them. It was a bit long for this page so I have included it on the forum.

30/12/06 I have been lucky
enough to get my hands on a copy of Richard Neil's new book.....

This is a brilliant book with more nostalgia than you can shake a stick at. The
words and pictures cover formulas such as Superstox, Hot Rods, Midgets, Stock
Saloons at tracks such as Wimbledon, Cross in Hand, Ringwood, Yarmouth, Ipswich,
Hednesford etc etc... Buy this one you'll love it, don't miss it!!! Here is what
Richard had to say about his book.....
Following my first two books I have now completed a third and final volume
covering the 1970s which includes, for the first time, a substantial colour
section (the entire second half of the book). The new book, called Backtrack
(subtitled The Golden Years of Oval Racing), will be published in November this
year.
This title follows the success of my two 'Golden Years books, "Hot Rod Racing"
and "Superstox and Stock Cars", both of which went for reprint within the first
four months of publication.
In addition to Superstox, Stock Cars and Hot Rods, all the formulae that were
not included in the first two volumes i.e. Stock Rods, Super Rods, Formula One,
Midgets and Bangers also get a look-in in the new volume!
The new book will again be published by Tempus and will include just over 250
pictures. To incorporate all those, the book has a slightly larger format - 96
Pages, 226 x 248 mm.
Paperback: 96 pages
Publisher: Tempus Publishing Ltd (Nov 2006)
ISBN: 0752440802
rrp: £14.99 (postage free from the author at PO Box 1670, Croydon, Surrey, CR9
1TU)

sent us details of the superb model Hot Rods that race at the purpose built
track near Wisbech, click here to to see the details.
Many of you will you be able to see these cars in action at Spedeworth's Ipswich
Spedeweekend.
19/11/05 Over in East
Anglia there is a club racing some amazing Radio Control SuperStox. They may not
be the cheapest RC models about but they are certainly a lot more affordable
than full sized racers and look extremely exciting. Click
here to learn more..
1/12/02 Perhaps not one of
the well known formulas on our tracks is the
Modstox Formula but it is a very cost effective way to
take to the raceways. The cars are now well turned out and provide an
excellent way into oval racing. David Roche, the chairman of the Modstox racing
club,
has sent us details and pictures of the formula.
