Many thanks to Alan
Parkinson for the comprehensive report.
Saloon Stock Cars
A fine showing of 32 drivers contested the annual Mayday Monday fixture
for Saloon Stock Cars, and unsurprisingly, there was some bruising
action, particularly in the West of England Championship.
Murray Jones (176) took up the running in heat one, with Barry Hollett
(30) moving through into second spot. Stuart Shevill (618) eventually
moved him aside, and this led to a good battle for third between Hollett
and Darren Barnet (512). With Jones clear at the front from Shevill,
Hollett and Barnett continued their duel, allowing Steve Webster (401)
and David Aldous (499), amongst others, through before the finish.
After Gareth Rixon (718) had led the opening laps of heat two D Barnett
moved through to take up the running. Phil Powell (199) had his best run
for some time by moving into second, although he was never to threaten
the leader. Shane Brown (720) moved into second spot just before the
finish.
Frank Little Junior (10) led the early stages of heat three, before
Graeme Shevill (661) took up the running. Murray Jones once again came
to the fore, as he moved into the lead at around half distance. Steve
Webster tracked him in the closing stages, and a magnificent last bend
challenge saw both cars cross the line within a split second of each
other, Jones just getting the verdict.
The West of England final was punctuated by assorted stoppages, as the
Taunton track helped promote the old adage of “too many cars on too
small a track”, it was indeed not for the faint hearted! When the race
eventually got fully under way Little Junior led for a time before D
Barnet took up the running. Brown had forced his way through the pack by
around half distance, and he moved Barnet aside to take up the running.
Nigel Parker (305) and Aldous moved into second and third respectively,
but there was no catching Brown as he emerged a clear winner.
Stock Rods
Glenn Sanders (34) led the opening laps of heat one for the Stock Rods,
only to retire around half distance, allowing Gary White (112) into the
lead. White eventually had
Scotsman Anthony Lattka (657) for company, and Lattka moved through in
the closing stages to take the victory on his track debut.
Sanders led the final for a long time, but his ill handling car allowed
Lattka to close the gap, and then move through into the lead. Mike
Hibberd (125) claimed second spot in the closing stages, whilst Sanders
held on for a fine third.
The Grand National once again saw Sanders out at the front, but this
time Hibberd made his track experience count as he came through from the
back of the grid to take up the running. Sanders did well to hold onto
second spot, as Barry Trickey (37) in a very smartly turned out new car
claimed third..
Micro Bangers
The Fast Food trio of Fish (107), Kebab (38) and Oggy (55), took this
year's Micro Bangers Triples Championship.
Assorted small cars were given one last blast at glory in the Micro
Bangers, with Florence (179) winning in a Micro, John Sparks (248)
taking a victory in a Nova saloon, and David Brown (908) securing the
final in a Kia Pride.
Sixteen drivers contested the end of day DD, as Chips (747) crowned a
fine performance to see off Darren Polden (474) and Buddy James (262).
Ministox
Jordan Patterson (925) led the opening laps of heat one, visitor Oliver
Skeels (124) taking up the running at around half distance. Lee Porter
(923) impressively worked his way through the field to pounce in the
dying stages, taking up the running as he did so. Skeels held second on
his track debut, with Amy Louise Deeble (985) taking third, despite the
L plates.
Patterson led the opening laps of heat two, with both Ashley Rice (938)
and Ben Goddard (995) giving him a close run for his money for a time.
As it was their challenge faded, allowing Skeels through to take up the
running. Patterson’s challenge also fell away, allowing Daniel Moss
(909) and Mark Bright (926) into second and third respectively.
Rice and then Patterson led the final, with Rice continuing in second
for a spell before dropping away. This allowed Skeels to challenge, and
then take up the running. Patterson held onto second place despite the
closing presence of Jordan Lobb (930) in third. Skeels duly claimed the
final to go with his earlier heat victory, certainly an impressive debut
from the Wisbech based youngster.

St Day
Sunday 4 May 2008
Many thanks to Alan
Parkinson for another of his great reports.
A good crowd, a sunny day,
and an absolutely superb display of quality short oval racing from the
Saloon Stock cars, BriSCA F2 Stock cars, and Reliant Robins.
BriSCA F2 Stock Cars
The monthly outing at St Day for the BriSCA F2 Stock Cars saw 29 drivers
in action. Ian Jeffries (992) had a spell at the front in the opening
heat before Gavin Pike (752) took up the running. Neil Hooper (676) was
sent spinning in the turnstile bend, and this created enough of a delay
to enable Chris Mikulla (9522) to attempt to reel in Pike. Try as he
might he could not close the gap sufficiently, thus Pike took the
victory from Mikulla, with Tim Farrell (667) third.
Roger Willcock (95) showed well in heat two for a time, until Eddie
Darby (677) managed to make a telling pass to take up the running. Rob
Batten (467) set off after the former Saloon Stock car star, but despite
getting ever so close at one stage he could not land the telling blow
and Darby duly held on to take his first ever victory in BriSCA F2’s.
Ashley Rundle (116) and Paul Rice (990) contested the lead in the
consolation for a time, Rice moving into the lead only to slow into
retirement handing the lead back to Rundle. A fine battle was developing
behind him, featuring Nathan Maidment (935) and Justin Fisher (315), and
this pair moved through to take first and second place, Fisher getting
the better of Maidment in the closing stages to take the victory.
A tremendous final saw Pike tangle up with Jefferies as he was poised to
take up the running, and this allowed Willcock to lead the way. Very
impressively he led too, as he saw off a number of challengers in the
shape of Darby, Paul Butcher (189) and Mikulla. A number of incidents in
the turnstile bend had taken out a number of drivers, Fisher in
particular was leading a charmed life, and was still in contention,
despite being one of the main perpetrators of the aforementioned events.
Scott Williams (812), newly up to red, took up the running, as Willcock
dropped down the field, Farrell being just one of the drivers to benefit
from the number of caution periods. With the lap boards out Williams saw
the car of Farrell’s beginning to get larger in his mirrors, but it was
only on the penultimate bend that Farrell threw everything at Wiliams.
He managed to hold on, but only just, and he took the final from Farrell
to great applause from the crowd. Fisher followed the pair home in third
spot.
Farrell finally took a victory in the Grand National, overcoming Pike,
and staying clear of a fast closing Dave Luscombe (642), to round off a
great afternoon of racing.
Saloon Stock Cars
A fine showing of 28 drivers headed west for the English Championship.
Racing to a two from three format, there were heat wins for Ian Jarman
(490), Murray Jones (176) and Shane Brown (720).
A coin toss was needed to determine who would earn pole, and that went
in favour of Murray Jones, who had Brown for company on the front row.
The action that followed was little short of stupendous as drivers
battled for the English title.
Jones and Brown swapped the lead repeatedly, until Jones sent Brown
spiralling up the pits bend fence in a most spectacular incident.
With Jones delayed, David Aldous (499) took the lead, but he was
overhauled by Todd Jones (186). Into the closing stages, and defending
Champion Craig Barnett (511) closed on Todd Jones, and seemed perfectly
placed to challenge and retain the title. Barnett left it until the
final bend, but his shove on Jones was a little under strength. Jones
held on, and as the two raced side by side for the line, it was Jones
who got there first by the most slender of margins.
Thus, Todd Jones became English Champion, just thirteen months after
making his debut in the Saloon Stock Car formula. The race had been
truly outstanding, and most befitting of an event of such importance.
The allcomers saw Murray Jones lead from flag to flag, with Brown unable
to close the gap sufficiently to mount a challenge he had to settle for
second spot.
Reliant Robins
The first ever St Day outing by the three-wheelers, saw nine Plastic
Pigs make it on to the track. 87 Barry Richards won all three races, and
there was all manner of action from the Robins, with rollovers galore,
mainly in the turnstile bend, and on the home straight. as the drivers
present put on a good show for the crowd.

Bovingdon 13th April

Sayell for the report and Paul Huggett for the pictures.
Steve’s Southern at
Bovingdon 13 April 08

Steve Brattan ultimately won the Southern Championship in a very close
final finish at the Midgets first meeting of the season. Steve took the
lead early on but by Geoff Bunn hounded him most of the way to the flag.
It was very close on the finishing line but Steve Brattan was just
enough ahead to take the trophy.
The first heat saw Neil Clarke and new driver Gary Grimsley in the ex
Rycroft car have a coming together. Neil’s new car lost rear suspension
and was not repairable at the track ending his racing for the rest of
the day. Prior to the incident Gordon Pooley and Scott Roth had been
very close for several laps, the result was declared as at lap 18 with
Gordon Pooley awarded the win.
Heat two saw the worst of the day’s weather with many cars spinning. One
exception was eventual winner Scott Roth. A second in heat one and 6th
in the final saw Scott overall points leader after round one.
World Champion Jason Carnwell had electrical problems in the first race
and a rear axle tie bar bracket break in the second sidelining him from
the final. Jason’s only consolation was that Jonathan Pooley seemed to
be having no luck with his new car scoring two 5th places only. 5 times
World Champion Klaus Kilianski made the trip from Germany but had a
slightly disappointing meeting with a third place in heat one but then
failed to score in either of the next 2 races again due to mechanical
problems.
The days results see Scott Roth, Gordon Pooley, Steve Brattan, Geoff
Bunn, Steve Young and Andrew Bilby making up the top 6.

The Midgets move on to Grimley on May 5th with the
last opportunity to score qualifying points for the European
Championship on May 18th at Hednesford.
Taunton 13
April 2008
Many thanks to Alan Parkinson for
the following three reports.
There was once again a huge
turnout of competitors at Smeatharpe Stadium, Taunton, as Stock Rods and
Bangerstox joined BriSCA F2 Stock Cars on the programme.
BriSCA F2 Stock Cars
Jamie Avery (126) led the opening heat of the day, until an early yellow
flag bunched the field up behind him. This allowed Piers Cockerill (497)
to move through into the lead. By half distance Chris Roots 9677) had
manoeuvred himself into second, but whilst he had closed the gap by the
finish he could not prevent Cockerill from taking the flag.
Returnee Dave Ruby (731) led heat two, until a Honiton bend clash
between Mike Priddle (14) and Matt Stoneman (127) brought out the
caution flags. Ruby led the re start, but Chris Cuming (393) was very
quickly into his stride, and he swiftly moved through to take up the
running. Scott Williams (812) tracked him in second spot for a while,
but couldn’t prevent Cuming claiming the victory.
Ian Jeffries (992) led the consolation until Kane Moore (832) took up
the running. Further back Priddle and Chris Stephens (628) fought over
second and third, whilst Chad Harris (29) eventually worked his way
towards the head of the field, capitalising on a mechanical fault with
the 832 machine by taking up the running. Stephens got the better of
Priddle to claim second.
Avery continued his fine form of late by leading the final for some
time, with Roger Willcock (95) following him in second. A caution period
was to change the complex nature of the race, as this coincided with a
hail storm, making the track very difficult on the restart. This allowed
Chris Bradbury (886), who up to the caution had been enjoying a good
battle with Neil Hooper (676), to move through into the lead, with
Hooper moving into second not long after. Bradbury extended his lead
somewhat by the flag, whilst Hooper took his best result of the season
thus far by claiming second, David Polley (38) left it until the dying
stages to take third spot.
A thirty car Grand National sped by in dry conditions, with an
assortment of leaders over the opening laps, including Jim Lewis (651)
and Matt Jeffries (838), before Ross Rowe (105) took up the running.
Bradbury was on a charge from the handicap, as Moore held off Rob Batten
(467) for second. Rowe took a convincing win, whilst Moore and Batten
claimed the other top three positions, Bradbury made it up to fourth
from the handicap with no help from a caution period.
Stock Rods
The highest number of Stock Rods at Smeatharpe for some time, eighteen,
made for some good close racing from the non contact brigade.
Whilst Glen Sanders (34) claimed a fine flag to flag victory in heat
one, most action centred on the battle for second, with a whole host of
cars vying for the place. Eventually visitor Nick Taylor (838) superbly
worked his way through the field to find himself in that coveted second
spot, with local man Brendon Sealy (730) travelling in his slip stream
to claim third.
Sanders once again showed a clean pair of heels to the rest by storming
off into the lead, leaving Matt Phillips (550) and Chris Drake (193) to
fight over second. Further back a good battle was developing until a
back straight crash took out Mike Hibberd (125) and Andy Thomas (27).
Whilst Sanders took the flag he had a fast closing Drake breathing down
his neck, with Phillips not that far behind him to complete the top
three.
A depleted Grand National saw Ian Frampton (244) head the field before
Gary White (112) moved through to take up the running. He eventually had
to give way to Phillips, and he held on to win from Drake and the
aforementioned Frampton.
Bangerstox
A superb turn out of Bangerstox meant for an action packed programme for
the popular formula.
After Brett Sedgbeer (153) had led the opening heat for a time it was
Hannah Creed (941) all the way from the rear of the grid that forcefully
worked her way through to take the flag.
Chris Burley (626) led heat two, before former Saloon Stock Car man
Andrew Lomas (144) claimed the victory.
Nigel Fordham (5) took the victory in heat three, with Milber Salvage
guru Steve Hunt (282) leading the four qualifiers over the line in the
consolation.
An early roll over brought the final to a halt. Fordham once again came
to the fore, moved into the lead, to be followed closely by Hunt, who
appeared to be so near yet so far away from making a challenge for the
lead. Fordam duly took the win, whilst Creed followed Hunt over the line
in third.
A couple of races followed, Julian Hellyer (708) taking the first of
those, whilst in the second allcomers the “infield warrior” Paul May
(778) took the victory.

St Day
6 April 2008
Despite the threats of extreme weather conditions it was in the main
dry, but very cold at United Downs Raceway, St Day.
BriSCA F2 Stock Cars
The opening heat saw young Jamie Avery (126) win for the very first
time, as he led home a hard charging Chris Mikulla (522), whilst Jeremy
Moss (707) pulled well clear of his only significant challenger, Piers
Cockerill (497), to take heat two on a difficult track. Kane Moore (832)
managed to hold his nerve in the consolation to take his first win of
the season, despite the growing presence of Dave Luscombe (642) and
Chris Roots (677) in his mirrors.
The final saw Avery and then Cockerill heading the field, but a number
of caution periods allowed Tim Farrell (667) to work his way towards the
front, to eventually move through to take up the running.
Farrell had been instrumental in the demise of fellow star Chris Cuming
(393) and 127 Matt Stoneman (127), And further good fortune followed, as
Roots challenged him for the lead, only to glance off the rear of
Farrell's car, and was delayed.
Further disappointment followed for Roots, for having crossed the line
second, he subsequently failed the post-race axle offset check, and had
to be excluded from the result. This promoted Luscombe into second,
whilst Justin Fisher (315) claimed a rare podium spot in third. Avery
and Cockerill showed strongly again in the Grand National, but after a
caution period as a result of a roll over for Ross Rowe (105) Luscombe
showed his liking for the St Day track by storming through to take the
win.
Bangers (under 1800cc)
Although there were a number of incomplete teams, the annual under
1800cc Team Championship for the Bangers produced a wealth of lively
action. First blood went to Posh Wash West, as they set a strong
foundation for themselves in heat one, by ensuring all four of their
team finished, with Steve Bailey (190) the race winner.
Dave Spooner (66) could not get his car to run in the first heat, but
was ready for heat two, and he inspired his team, Renegades A, to a fine
result which got them back in the hunt for the title. Jamie Jenkin took
the win (479), as all four of Renegades A went the distance.
The star of heat three was James Ogborn (55) of the Fast Food team.
Under intense pressure as the last of his team, he drove superbly to
eliminate some other drivers, yet still finish the race himself. The
first four places were filled by two drivers from Posh Wash West, and
two from Renegades A, and thus Posh Wash West maintained their lead to
run out overall winners of the competition.
Once the three races of the Team Championship had been concluded, the
day's events for the Bangers finished with a Destruction Derby contest,
in which Anthony Sleeman (452) outlasted the rest, to take the victory.
Ministox
Honours were well shared amongst the youngsters in the Ministox, as
Jordan Pattison (925) took the opening heat, leading home Ryan Hoskins
(991), with Hoskins going one better in the next race by taking heat two
from Lee Porter (923). Vicky Butcher (981) led the opening laps of the
final before Hoskins took up the running. Jason Cox (971) swiftly moved
through the field to go into second spot. Hoskins suffered a problem
with just a couple of laps to go, and this allowed Cox to move into the
lead, whilst further back Porter and Moon challenged for a podium
position. Cox was first over the line in the final, but was disqualified
at post-race scrutineering after his car failed the height test, and
that promoted Porter into first place, Moon and Ollie Wakefield (944)
taking second and third respectively.

cold weather contrived to spoil the racing at Smeatharpe Stadium,

BriSCA F2 Stock Cars
For the second time this season, National Points Champion 7 Gordon
Moodie, returned back home to Scotland with a final win to his credit,
as he again extended his hoodoo over the westcountry stars.
Chris Cuming (393) celebrated the first win of his comeback as he took
the opening heat, and Chris Rowe (76) took the chequered flag in heat
two, which saw Steve Davies (499) brilliantly shift aside 7 Gordon
Moodie (7) and Tim Farrell (667) to claim second place. The consolation
went the way of Matt Stoneman (127), as he led home Ross Rowe (105)
The KAY Transport Ltd sponsored final was led for some time by Jamie
Avery (126)- enjoying his best form yet. Piers Cockerill (497) gradually
closed in on the leader, but just as he was about to mount a challenge
Moodie appeared on the scene to move inside the pair. To his credit
Cockerill stayed with the leader for a couple of laps, but appeared to
be just too far away to mount a challenge, thus Moodie pulled away to
take an emphatic win in the end. Farrell had worked his way up to third
by the finish, but he was to be disqualified due to a rear axle offset
fault, and this promoted Avery up to third, his best ever finish so far.
Cockerill won a hectic Grand National, leading home Bernie Serpell
(612), Stoneman, and Avery.
Saloon Stock Cars
Thanks to a good number of long distance travellers there was a fine
showing of Saloons, and they stole the show and the silverware.
Shaun Webster (402) opened his account by taking heat one, but then Todd
Jones (186) wound his new car up to good effect, taking heat two, but
only just, after a fine battle with Graeme Shevill (661), and then
leading home Webster and Nigel Parker (305) to take the final.
Bangerstox
With 74 drivers in action, the Bangerstox set a new all-time car turnout
record.
Heat wins went the way of Ben Sealy (475), Andy Partridge (332) and Paul
Fisher (75). After a victory in the consolation, Gary Holmes (369) then
swept majestically to the chequered flag in the final, leading home
Fisher and Steve Hunt (282).
Over 40 drivers contested the Allcomers, which was won by Ross Thomas
(619), after long time leader Paul May (778) lost out amidst some home
straight chaos.
Reliant Robins
The Bank Holiday crowd were kept hugely entertained by the antics of the
three-wheeler drivers. Jon Sparks(248) caught the eye in the first race,
as he sort to put his car on its roof in each and every bend. Mark
Wlaznik (115), Sam Summerhayes (116) and Craig Wright (117) turned on
the style in the second race, as each driver rolled spectacularly.
Summerhayes and Barry Richards (87) were the race winners during the
course of the afternoon..
